Birds On A Wire

This image I captured while I was walking really caught my attention. I was thinking about the birds being free and yet perched in this tangled labyrinth. Perhaps there is safety in all of these wires, perhaps they didn’t have a choice for a secure place to rest at night.

As I walked home, the phrase “birds on a wire” came to my mind like an abrupt telephone call and so I looked it up.

When I read what it meant, I realized how significant and powerful this message was!

The phrase "birds on a wire" typically serves as a poetic or idiomatic metaphor for being caught between freedom and vulnerability.

And if that wasn’t enough to ruffle your feathers, I also discovered that Leonard Cohen wrote a song called Birds On The Wire, where he used the image to describe his personal quest for redemption and the difficulty of staying truly free in an imperfect world.

All of this spoke deeply and personally to me and I share because I know I am not alone in this.

It is my understanding that true freedom can only be experienced when accompanied with absolute vulnerability.

What wire do you perch on between freedom and vulnerability?
